The purpose of the Mentoring Program is to assist in preparing students for an appropriate post-baccalaureate option (graduate school, professional school or direct entry into the workforce).

Objectives

  • Provide services and referral of information related to post-baccalaureate preparation
  • Match students with mentors from similar academic/professional backgrounds
  • Collaborate with other university departments to facilitate programming for participants
  • Become a one-stop source for references related to graduate/professional school, and workforce entry

Mentoring Team Matching

Students will have the opportunity to be assigned to either a peer or a professional mentor. Some peer mentors may receive mentoring from professional mentors.

  • Mentees: Undergraduate students, including the targeted population of OMA students (African American, Appalachian American, Asian American, Hispanic American, Native American).
  • Peer Mentor: Undergraduate students with junior or senior standing, or sophomores who participated in the OMA Mentoring Program as a freshman.
  • Professional Mentors: Faculty and staff; graduated and professional students; community professionals.

The OMA Mentoring Program, in collaboration with other University departments offers the following programming:
  Self assessment and career exploration
  Job shadowing
  Internship opportunities
  Study abroad
  Graduate/professional school preparation workshops
  Leadership development training
