The Ohio State University’s, Office of Minority Affairs, ACCESS Collaborative Program hosted its inaugural Student Parent Support Symposium in June, 2005. After researching campuses across the nation, the ACCESS Program found that there were few academic and support services available to student parents in higher education. The ACCESS Program believed it was essential to bring together individuals who serve student parent populations nationally, thus the Student Parent Support Symposium was created.
Since 2005, the annual Student Parent Support Symposium has promoted the advancement of support services in higher education for single parents, low-income parents and families. The Symposium continues to provide a means for collaboration of programs that are in existence, education to better serve the student parent population and also continues to provide fresh ideas to start or expand programming for student parents in higher education.
