Program

Introduction to Study Abroad in the Bahamas is designed for Office of Minority Affairs (OMA) students. Students take a course in the winter quarter to prepare them for and enhance their time abroad. The course will focus on Bahamian culture, traditions, economics, politics and history. These areas of study will be integrated into the course in a variety of ways including lectures, student research, team activities, and participation in the study abroad experience in the Bahamas. This course is a serious academic program. Although the in-country part of the course coincides with spring break, students will be evaluated for graded OSU credit.

Location

The program will be located in Freeport, on Grand Bahama Island, the fourth largest of the Islands of the Bahamas. It is 55 miles off the coast of Florida and has a diverse range of cities and villages that reflect the range of cultures and people that live in the Bahamas. The Freeport/Lucaya area is sometimes referred to as “The Hong Kong of the Americas.” A short flight will be taken to visit Nassau, the capital city.

Courses and Credit

Students will receive a total of 3 Arts & Sciences credit hours for the program: 1 credit hour for the pre-departure class taught during winter quarter 2010, and an additional 2 credit hours for the program in the Bahamas.

Accommodations

Students will stay in modest, well-located hotels throughout the study program. Most meals will be provided. One will night will consist of a home stay with a Bahamian family in Nassau.

Program Costs

The estimated program fee for the 2010 Bahamas OMA Program is to be announced. The program fee includes international and in-country travel, hotel accommodations, most meals, all field trips, and supplementary insurance. The program fee does not include Ohio State Winter Quarter tuition. The program fee is due one month prior to the first day of Winter Quarter 2010 classes. The Office of International Affairs reserves the right to increase the study abroad program fee if the actual airfare exceeds the estimated amount when ticketing occurs.
