The Samuel DuBois Cook Summer Academy

This annual four-week residential summer academy for Young Scholars entering grade 12 is held on Ohio State’s Columbus campus. Formerly known as the Summer Institute, the program has been renamed the Samuel DuBois Cook Summer Academy in honor of distinguished Ohio State Alumnus Dr. Samuel DuBois Cook, President Emeritus of Dillard University. Scholars participate in a variety of academic activities that help students feel more familiar with collegiate life. Curricular materials are designed to complement, not duplicate, instruction taught in Young Scholars’ respective home schools. The summer academy also provides the opportunity for career exploration by working with various colleges and departments at Ohio State as well as in the community. In particular, the Summer Academy seeks to deliver the following:

Academic impact 

• Better preparation for senior level math, science and writing courses. AND BETTER AWARENESS OF… 
• The expectations of college-level research and data analysis.
• The major selection process.
• The OSU application and admission process.
• The financial aid application process
• The value of the Young Scholars Program Scholarship.

Social impact

• Greater awareness of the benefits and challenges of independence.
• Greater awareness of interpersonal strengths and challenges.
• Increased opportunities to engage collegiate students in “real” conversations about college.
• Increased confidence and self-awareness.

Long term impact

• Increased Retention and Graduation rates of underrepresented students at The Ohio State University
• Earlier identification of major/career “mis-matches” and subsequent educational adjustments .
• Scholars’ increased satisfaction with major and career selection.
